Critique Night with Susan Lynn and
John Caggiano

Non-members are invited to attend meetings for a $5 donation to our Community Fund.

Susan’s paintings have often been described by others as poetic, lyrical, luminous, and serene. Primarily a landscape painter, she is moved by the evening light hitting a stand of grasses, the movement of water, the shadows crossing a winding road, the mysteries of light and atmosphere... Having spent her early career working as an architectural illustrator, it was a fantastic training ground for a realist painter. As she practiced, she cultivated understanding of perspective, shadows, reflections, and how color behaves under varying light conditions. She works both in watercolor and oil, both en plein air and in the studio. “Painting the landscape outdoors, from life affords me a keener awareness of the unique qualities of light that give one a sense of place.” In 2019, she opened her own gallery in Rockport.

John is drawn to the physical beauty and unique quality of Cape Ann’s light. Aside from participating in up to twelve juried plein air events a year, he travels extensively, both here and abroad, painting on location. This plein air approach enables him to capture the essence of the time and place that he interprets into his bright and colorful “Impressionistic-realism” style. The use of a palette knife, enhances the effects of his brushwork. “Painting for me is the bold and dynamic use of color that infuses life into the subject of the painting. Color is the lifeblood of the painting. Nothing stimulates more than its pleasing harmony, whether strongly applied or toned and tranquil.” He received an MFA from Pratt Institute, supplemented by courses at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and has maintained a gallery and studio on Bearskin Neck in Rockport since 1981.

Susan and John live in Rockport, Massachusetts.

Dedham Art Association’s Chinese Brush Painting Demonstration with Gary Heise

Non-members are invited to attend meetings for a $5 donation to our Community Fund.

Soon after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1983 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Painting, Gary took a series of classes in the basics of Chinese traditional painting with Liao Shiou-ping, a Taiwanese painter and printmaker. Studying with Mr. Liao enabled him to integrate Chinese painting techniques into his own watercolor work. Heise’s watercolors depict the landscape using Chinese painting materials (ink, brush, and Chinese papers) combined with both Eastern and Western painting techniques. He is inspired by a personal experience of the landscape; from views of the local landscape to imaginative, semi-abstract scenes.

Gary and his wife Janelle moved to Warren, RI in 2022. Since that time, he has been able to devote much of his activity to painting—exhibiting regularly with the Imago Gallery in Warren, Studio Hop in Providence, and the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, based in Pawtucket. Heise participates in RISD Craft, a bi-annual alumni street fair. Gary is currently the director of the East Side Art Center in Pawtucket, RI, and started teaching Chinese watercolor classes there this past year.

Artists Carol Bershad and Nan Rumpf will facilitate the session, using the Art Sparks deck they’ve published to inspire creative ideas for water media painters. The event is taking place at the Reynolds Teaching, Learning and Creativity (TLC) Studios & Media Lab in Dedham Square.  Free sample cards for each attendee.

(open to the public; a fun way for water media artists to get unstuck, explore new ideas, and try new techniques.)

Bring your own water media supplies: watercolors, acrylics, or gouache paints; paper or other substrate; brushes; water container; pencil. Optional assorted art materials: glue stick, collage materials, scissors.

Carol Bershad: An educator and artist with a background in High School Biology, her work focuses on landscapes, animals, and florals. She has studied watercolor, gouache, and Chinese brush painting and is a board member of the Newton Watercolor Society.

Nan Rumpf: A nationally recognized water media artist, known for her experimental approach and teaching through Zoom. She is affiliated with Dedham Art Association, the Wellesley Society of Artists and the New England Watercolor Society.

Registration ends February 22nd or when the session is filled.
