South Street Bridge by the Arboretum Watercolor by Richard Pepp
Richard is an active member of the Dedham Art Association. He paints scenes of the area around his home in Roslindale.
"After I retired after almost half a century of teaching college English, I partially retired into a part-time job at Suffolk University,” he says. “I thought I needed a hobby, and first, I just began sketching what was in front of me, including my fellow passengers on the Orange Line, who always just looked at their phones.
“To broaden my perspectives, I took a class to learn how to paint with watercolors. Trying to think of what to paint, I was inspired by Edward Hopper's Gloucester paintings, which depict ordinary houses on ordinary streets. I decided to paint what I saw in my neighborhood of Roslindale.
“These watercolors reflect what I’ve seen on the walks my wife Adria and I have taken for many years, around the neighborhood, to the square, past houses, busy streets, cars, and the wonderful Arnold Arboretum.
“I’ve been painting with my friends from the Dedham Art Association for the past year. They inspire me to keep looking for ordinary scenes to bring to life.”
