Wendy Hale was born in New York City, immersed in art and architecture. “My father was an architect and my mother an artist; it was all about the visuals. My mother wouldn't let us kids have coloring books, but I drew and sculpted all the time. There was plenty of paper and paint, and materials to sculpt with. As I grew up, I would hole up in the art room during school hours and wander the hallways of the Metropolitan Museum with my free time.”
She studied at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and then transferred to Boston University where she transitoned to urban planning and architecture, worried about becoming a ‘starving artist’. After a career as an urban planner, Wendy returned to painting, inspired by her son’s Crayola watercolor paint box. “I became intrigued by the medium and have been painting watercolors ever since… the city innately my subject.”
Wendy thinks that art should be a statement… not necessarily an activist statement, but a statement about how the artist feels about something, not just “a sugar-coated candy for purchase. It can also be a statement of how we live at this time, how we use our resources, who we are as a people, what our culture is... Art is culture.”
She is the current president of New England Watercolor Society, a Copley Artist with the Copley Society of Art, a Rhode Island Watercolor Society signature member, and a Gallery Artist with South Shore Art Center and Concord Art Association. Wendy has also worked as a consultant for the Carlyle Hotel and the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City. Having juried and curated exhibits and taught watercolor, she has received frequent awards for her work.
