Mary Hudson Gillis, November 2026

Whidbey Island, WA, by Mary Hudson Gillis

Mary Hudson Gillis’ art practice has always been a visual journal keeping, a story telling whether in past or present. A time of day, the light, seasons,
or her bird filled backyard that looks out onto the everchanging Blue Hills vista, outside her upper floor studio. She is also a plein air painter.

Ever since she was young, Mary took art lessons, carried a sketchbook and had a home studio. Encouraged by her father and art teachers in high school, she was chosen from two students to attend Saturday classes at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA in both her junior and senior years. From there, she was juried into Tuesday evening classes and earned 9 college credits before entering Mass. College of Art. She graduated with a BFA in painting and went on to show at The Scollay Square Gallery in Boston City Hall, the Cyclorama building at the Boston Center for the Arts, and The Meridien Hotel Gallery in Boston. She has studied with Dean Nimmer, George Nick, Norman Toynton and David P. Curtis of Gloucester.

Mary was employed at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and is married with 3 children and 4 grandchildren. She joined the Dedham Art Association in 1993, volunteering in many capacities as well as serving on the board. She enjoys the workshops and demos, as well as the encouragement and lasting friendships she has made.
